How to wash an NFL premier jersey without messing up the numbers?

I bought a NFL Premier jersey (otherwise known as a swingman jersey) a year ago. After i washed it the first time the stiched on numbers were damaged. The numbers had creases on them as if the jersey was smashed. How can i was my new premier jersey so I don't run into those same problems. BTW I did not dry the jersey I only washed it in cold water and i hung it up to dry.

inside out ,and very cool wash , you could also pre soak it ,

Washing in cold is a good start... next turn the jersey inside out before washing. Then dry on the gentle cycle OR better yet dry on a clothes line if available. You could even dry it by putting in on a hanger in front of an open window or hang it from the shower curtain. BUt the inside out trick is one I have used for years with printed tees and jerseys
